How to identify sign substrates on site

The substrate you fix a sign to decides the fixings, the method, and the price. Learn to identify brick, render, timber cladding, metal cladding, and glass on site, and why getting it wrong costs you on install day.

The substrate is what you fix a sign to, and identifying it correctly on site decides the fixings, the installation method, and the price. Brick takes a different fixing to composite panel, which takes a different approach to glass. Get the substrate wrong on the survey and you find out on install day, which is the most expensive place to learn.

Here's how to identify the substrates you'll meet most often, and what each one means for the job.

Masonry: brick, block, and stone

Brick, block, and stone are solid substrates that take mechanical fixings well. Tap it, solid masonry sounds and feels dense; it doesn't flex or echo. These take plugs and screws or resin anchors depending on load, and they're generally the most predictable substrate to fix to.

Watch for the condition. Old, soft, or crumbling mortar changes the fixing. Painted brick can hide the real state of what's underneath.

Render and plaster

Render is a surface coat over masonry or block, so what matters is what's behind it. A knock will often sound more hollow than solid brick. The risk is fixing into render alone rather than the substrate behind it, which won't hold a sign.

You need to know the render's thickness and what it's covering. Fixings have to reach the solid material underneath, and drilling render can crack or blow it if you're not careful.

Timber and cladding

Timber substrates flex and sound hollow when tapped, and they take screws directly but the condition is everything. Painted timber panelling on a shopfront is common, and it's often in worse shape than it looks. Check for rot, soft spots, and whether it's actually structural or just a decorative facing over something else.

Note if it needs making good. Timber that needs filling, sanding, or repainting before or after the sign goes up is a cost, and it's the kind of thing that causes friction if nobody flagged it on the survey.

Glass and glazing

Glass takes no mechanical fixing, so signage on glass means vinyl, film, or standoff fixings into the frame, not the pane. For window graphics, what you're surveying is the glass area and the frame. For anything mounted, you're fixing to the surround, never the glass itself.

Measure the glass and the frame separately, and note whether it's a single pane or divided, because that changes how graphics are laid out.

Why this belongs on the survey

Record the substrate and its condition at every sign location, because it's the detail that most often turns a clean install into a problem. "Some kind of cladding" isn't good enough. The estimator prices the fixing off it, the fabricator chooses the method off it, and the install team turns up prepared or unprepared based on it.

If you're genuinely unsure what you're looking at, say so on the survey and get a closer look or a second opinion, rather than guessing. A wrong guess about the substrate is the classic reason a job comes back for a return visit or a refabrication.
