Common signage fixings and which substrate takes what

The substrate decides the fixing. Here's a practical guide to matching common signage fixings, screws, anchors, resin, standoffs, and tape systems, to the surfaces sign installers actually meet.

The substrate decides the fixing, and matching them correctly is the difference between a sign that stays up and a call-back. Solid masonry takes mechanical anchors, timber takes screws directly, render needs to reach the structure behind it, and glass takes no penetration at all. Here's a practical run-through of the common pairings, and the condition checks that change the answer.

One honest note up front: this is general guidance, not an engineering spec. Sign weight, wind load, and local requirements all matter, and a heavy or high sign deserves a proper fixing specification, not a rule of thumb.

Solid masonry: brick, block, stone

Masonry takes mechanical fixings well: plugs and screws for lighter signs, sleeve or through-bolt anchors as weight goes up, and chemical (resin) anchors where the load is serious or the masonry is questionable. Fix into the brick, not the mortar joints, where you can, and check the condition first. Old, soft brick or crumbling mortar changes the plan; resin anchors are more forgiving in poor masonry than expansion anchors, which rely on the material holding the outward force.

Timber

Timber is the simplest pairing: screws, directly, sized to the sign. The checks are condition and what the timber actually is. Rot and soft spots don't hold a screw. Decorative timber facing over a cavity holds a screw but not a load, you need to find the framing behind it or treat it like a hollow substrate. And note if the fixing points will need making good or repainting, because that's part of the job.

Render and plaster

Never hang a sign off render alone. Render is a coating, and its grip on the wall is not your fixing. The fixing has to pass through the render and anchor in the masonry or structure behind it, which means knowing (or carefully finding out) the render's thickness. Drill carefully, render cracks and blows around careless holes, and the making-good bill follows.

Hollow and lightweight substrates

For plasterboard, hollow linings, and thin sheet materials, the honest answer is: fix to the structure behind, not the lining. Cavity fixings exist and have their place for light signs, but the reliable move for anything with weight is finding the studs, noggins, or frame and fixing into those. If a survey can establish the stud positions, the install stops being exploratory.

Metal cladding and sheet

Fixing to metal cladding usually means one of two things: self-drilling screws into the sheet for light signs, or reaching through to the structure (purlins, framing) for anything heavier. The sheet alone flexes and fatigues under load it wasn't meant to carry. Also think about what's behind before drilling, services run in cladding cavities, and about sealing every penetration properly, because a leaking fixing point becomes the building owner's problem and then yours.

Glass

No penetration, ever. Signage on or at glass means vinyl and film applied to the pane, or mechanical fixings into the frame and surround, or standoff systems anchored to the structure around the glass. Survey the frame as its own substrate, because that's what you're actually fixing to.

Tape and adhesive systems

High-bond tape and structural adhesives have a real place, on clean, flat, stable surfaces with light, well-supported signs, and they're often the answer where penetration isn't allowed. Their enemies are dust, moisture, cold application temperatures, and painted surfaces where the paint's grip becomes the real fixing. Surface prep decides the outcome, and "it's held so far" is not a fixing specification for anything overhead.

Record the substrate, decide the fixing

The pattern across all of these: the fixing decision is only as good as the substrate information behind it. That's why the survey should record what the surface is, what condition it's in, and what's behind it, with photos, so the fixing gets chosen in the workshop with full information, not improvised up a ladder.
