What to photograph on every sign site survey: the 5 shots

Every sign site survey needs five photos as a minimum: the wide elevation, the sign area up close, the substrate and fixing points, the access route, and the power source. Get all five at each sign location and the office has what it needs to quote and build the job without a single phone call back to site.
The problem isn't taking photos, everyone takes photos. It's taking the right ones. A camera roll with forty shots of a shopfront and none of the power point is useless. Here are the five that actually matter, and why each one earns its place.
1. The wide elevation
Shoot the whole elevation the sign sits on, not just the sign. The office needs context: how the sign relates to the building, what's around it, where it sits on the frontage. A tight crop of the fascia tells them nothing about the two metres of brickwork above it or the shopfront next door they'll be working alongside.
This is the shot that orients everyone who wasn't on site. Take it first, before you get in close.
2. The sign area, up close
Get a clear, square-on shot of exactly where the sign goes. This is the one you'll annotate with measurements, so frame it so the dimensions make sense: the full width and height of the sign area, with room to mark the numbers on.
Square-on matters. A photo taken at an angle distorts the proportions, makes measurements harder to read off later, and is no use to your designer trying to mock up the new sign on the building. A clean, straight-on shot is what artwork gets built from.
3. The substrate and fixing points
Photograph what you're fixing to, and photograph it close enough to see the material. This is the shot that stops fabrication errors. The office needs to see whether it's brick, composite panel, timber, or render, because that changes the fixings and the method.
If there are existing fixing points, holes, or brackets, get those too. And if the substrate's in poor condition, painted timber that's flaking, render that's blown, capture that, because it changes the job and it's the kind of thing that causes an argument on install day if nobody flagged it.
4. The access route
Show how the install team gets to the sign. Photograph the approach, the working area at ground level, and anything that affects access: a narrow footpath, a busy road, parked cars, a locked gate, low clearance. If it needs a ladder, a tower, or a MEWP, the photo should make that obvious.
Access is where install quotes go wrong. A sign that looks simple in a close-up can be a half-day job once you factor in the traffic management nobody photographed.
5. The power source
If the sign's illuminated, photograph where the power comes from. The nearest source, the route it would take, and whether there's anything there already. If a new circuit needs running, the photo of that gap is what justifies the line on the quote.
This is the single most forgotten shot, and the single most expensive to miss. Nobody drives back for a measurement. They drive back because they never photographed what was behind the fascia.
Get all five at every location
On a multi-sign job, take the full set at each location, don't assume one covers another. The fascia and the projecting sign have different elevations, different substrates, different access, and different power. Five shots each, tied to the right location, and the office can quote the whole job from their desk.
That's the difference between a survey and a camera roll. Five deliberate shots beat fifty random ones every time.
